In Spring 2013, Kingswood Oxford was accepted into the Global Online Academy (GOA), a prestigious nonprofit consortium of leading independent schools that offers students the opportunity to enhance their bricks-and-mortar education with a rich digital learning experience. GOA's mission is to replicate in online classrooms the intellectually rigorous programs and excellent teaching that are hallmarks of its member schools; to foster new and effective ways, through best practices in online education, for students to learn; and to promote students’ global awareness and understanding by creating truly diverse, worldwide, online schoolroom communities. KO is one of over 65 member schools in the world, including King's Academy in Madaba-Manja, Jordan; International School of Beijing in China; Jakarta International School in Indonesia; and Eton College in Winsor, UK. It is also one of only a handful of GOA schools in CT. Modern Languages teacher and Academic Technology Coordinator Jen Weeks is the site director for GOA@KO.
GOA courses can provide a number of educational opportunities for students:
- the flexibility to learn at their own pace, at any time of day and from anywhere
- opportunities to partner and build relationships with teachers and students from around the United States and the world.
- acquire valuable information and communication technology (ICT) skills:
-- set up video conferences across time zones
-- work collaboratively on assignments synchronously and asynchronously
-- use Google Apps for Education, and
-- access and navigate a learning management system.
GOA offers courses ranging from Medical Problem-Solving, to Japanese Language Through Culture, to iOS App Design, to Power: Redressing Inequity Through Data, to Architecture, to Entrepreneurship in a Global Context.
