Week 2: July 10-14, 2017
This creative writing camp for 6-9th graders will offer a fun, supportive, and inspiring week of writing original short stories and poems. We will examine elements of creative writing such as character development, dialogue, point-of-view, plot, and imagery while looking at published writing and crafting our own work. Various in-class writing exercises aimed at encouraging originality will help spark ideas and get your words flowing. Throughout the session, we will produce stories and poems that can be shared at the end of the week. Come prepared to explore your imagination and have fun writing!
For students entering grades 5-9. Minimum enrollment 6; maximum enrollment 12.
Program runs from 8:30am - 4:30pm.

Instructor: Melanie Faranello received her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from The New School and has over fifteen years experience teaching as an adjunct professor at various universities throughout Chicago, New York City, and Hartford. Her fiction has been published in numerous literary magazines and journals and received several mentions including nomination for a Pushcart Prize. She has also worked extensively as a teaching artist bringing creative writing to youth and teens in schools, after-school programs, non-profit organizations. Hartford Young Writers is her program designed to bring creative writing to diverse populations and she most recently taught workshops at Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford. Melanie lives in West Hartford with her husband and two sons.
