Field Hockey – Girls Varsity vs Canterbury School – Away
V Field Hockey
The team came out quick on the attack.
Within the first 3 minutes of the game Tori Swanson ‘21 scored. She played a great game by out hustling, out smarting and out sprinting Canterbury the entire game. Canterbury became very frustrated by our speed and the fact that they had to work extremely hard to get the ball by Arie Lang ‘22. Arie was a tremendous play maker and stopped everything that came at her. She consistently had her stick flat on the turf and every time she stops them dead in their tracks. Canterbury had a few break throughs but could never be consistent due to our aggressively skilled defensive line played by Camy Forslund ‘21, Keegan McMahon ‘21, Margo Dogiewicz ‘21 and Alex Arnold ‘23. Goalie Caitlin Budzik ‘21 had 5 saves, dove every chance she got and took control of the back field. Towards the end off the first half of the game Cici Chagnon ‘21 had one of many breakaways that forced their goalie to come out and attack her. As Canterbury’s goalie approached Cici, Cici went to dodge her and the goalie with full force, threw herself at Cici for one last effort to save the ball and ended up plowing Cici over which in turn created a penalty stroke. Cici approached the stroke line a little shook up but can easily get her head back Into the game. As she took her stroke the ball was just a little too high and missed the goal at the top left corner. Towards the end of the first half Canterbury snuck by us and took a shot on goal from the top of the circle. One of our players reached in to stop the ball and it ricocheted off her stick, popped up and flew right into our goal to tie the game 1-1. Coming into the second half of the game we knew what we had to do and Abby McLaughlin ‘22 took control of the game, stopped them from getting down the field and never gave up. We needed to get them out of our heads because we had the skill but they were not beating us at that. As time ran off the clock, we put the pressure on. Izzy Burke’21 planted herself in front of the goal and as the ball came threw she stayed low and swept it in. That brought us to a 2-1 lead. At 10 minutes left in the half Izzy Burke was in an all out sprint to beat Canterbury to the ball, reached out and lost her balance. As she lost her balance she took Canterbury’s player down with her which the refs called it a dangerous play and put her in the penalty box for 5 minutes. With 10 minutes left in the game, we are down one player for 5 minutes and had a one goal lead. Canterbury ended up with a corner with 0 seconds on the board. As the ball came into play, they crossed it in front of our goal and they sent it out of bounds which gave us the win! Other playmakers that contributed to our win were Allie Kotowitz ‘23, Katherine Doar ‘22, Alyssa Pavano ‘22 and Lucia Gomez ‘23.
