In a match that pit two long-time rivals against each other, the KO JV Boys’ tennis team had its first outing this season against the Griffins of Pomfret School.
At the outset, the Wyverns swept the doubles matches with some exciting and impressive performances. At #1 doubles, James Bayer (’18) and Sharif Mutasim (’18) played brilliantly and took their match by a score of 8 games to 5. John Fu (’19) and Jack Gao (’19) had the spectators on the edge of their seats, and they managed to pull off a win in a sudden death tie-breaker (7 points to 5) in the seventeenth game of the match in the #2 doubles slot. Playing at #3 doubles, Ben Clark (’20) and Tong Lei (’19) steamrolled over the opposition to win their match easily, 8 games to 1 in the pro set. While these were going on, returning player Charlie Coxon (’19) was quietly wearing out his opponent, and he went on to win his match in the shut out 8 games to 0. At this point, KO was leading in match scores 2-0, needing only two more matches to win overall. Ethan Raisner (’21) had his hands full, being a new player on the squad, and he dropped his #5 singles match 8 games to 1. A solid returning player, Michael Autorino (’19), played at #4 singles, and was frustrated by a series of missed opportunities, losing his match 8 games to 2. Newcomer Drini Puka (’21) played at #3, and he, too, missed some golden opportunities to take down his opponent, losing his match 8 games to 2. Jacob Schwartz (’21) made short order of his competition, winning his match at #2 singles by a score of 8 games to 1. The final match of the day was very exciting, pitting returning player Andrew Holland(’19) against a very steady Griffin from Pomfret. Andrew had our squad watching and cheering with each point. Unfortunately, Andrew could not hold on at the crucial deuce points, and he dropped his match 2 games to 8. KO lost this match 3 team points to 4 overall, but they played much better against this team than a year ago. Our hope is to work hard over the next two weeks to prepare to host our toughest opponent, the Mountain Goats, from Hopkins School, on April 18. Go Wyverns!
