Girls Squash Looks To Make Mark At Nationals

In the midst of a solid season, the Kingswood Oxford varsity girls squash team will look to make its mark at the 2019 HEAD U.S. High School Team Squash Championships starting Friday.

The Wyverns will take on Nardin Academy in a Round of 16 match on Friday morning at 11:30 at Avon Old Farms. A win Friday morning would set up a match with the winner of Riverdale NYL/SquashSmarts Varsity on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

Kingswood Oxford has won two of its last three matches and is 6-3 so far this season. The Wyverns will be competing in Division 5 at Nationals.

“We’re ranked in the top 4 in that division (out of 16 teams), so we have a good chance of moving far into the tournament,” said Kingswood Oxford coach Cameron Biondi.

Nationals will be a good test for the Wyverns and hopefully serve as a springboard into the final month of the season. Kingswood Oxford has six more matches before New England’s on Feb. 23 and 24.

The Wyverns knocked off Kent School (Jan. 19) and Suffield Academy (Jan. 23) by identical 5-2 scores and enter Nationals coming off a 6-1 loss to Taft on Saturday.

“Our players have been anticipating this tournament since the beginning of the season,” coach Biondi said. “We've been working on all kinds of shots in practice and choosing personal goals before matches to translate that practice work into matchplay. I think our recent performances, particularly against the tougher teams when we had to put a lot more into staying in the match mentally, have shown that we're ready to take on an important string of matches in a tournament setting.”

Coach Biondi is looking forward to seeing what his team can accomplish and the Wyverns enter the event playing good squash and healthy.

“We're also finally back to our full roster, so the players can settle into their true positions on the team ladder,” Biondi said. “That will hopefully produce better match-ups in the tournament and allow our players to get back into their grooves on the court. Unlike New Englands, Nationals is a true team tournament - full teams compete against full teams, not players entering a tournament of other teams' players in their rank - so I think it will be a great bonding experience for the players, as well.”
