Wyvern Sports Wraps - Feb. 28, 2019

The JV Girls' Basketball team won 50-31 against Canterbury on Feb. 23. Taking the lead at the very start of the game and never relinquishing it, KO played a solid game of defense, transition, and half court offense. Playing in their last KO basketball game, senior co-captains Alessia Caruso '19 and Lian Wolman '19 helped give the team the leadership and direction to play up to their abilities. Emma Henry '21 led all scorers with 30 points and Catherine Daniels '21 led the team in assists for the game. This game caps a very successful season for the Wyverns, finishing up with a record of 9-3.

The JV Boys’ Basketball team lost 49-57 against Williston on Feb. 20. KO played well and competed to the end. Christian Pedro ’22 and Sam Capodice ’20 led the scoring with 14 and 13, respectively. John Doar ’20 and Nate Capodice ‘21 contributed with seven and six points apiece. Wes Pierce ’20 and Jeff Davis ’21 had numerous rebounds for KO. Jack Risley ’20 did a great job off the bench for the Wyverns. All the KO players played hard and gave a great effort throughout the game. It was the second season in a row the JV team finished with a winning record against very good competition. Congrats to the entire team.

The MS Boys' A Basketball team hosted Renbrook on Feb. 20 for the final game of the season and outmatched the Hawks 58-38. Taking an early lead, the Wyverns maintained control of the game throughout, despite frequent turnovers and a strong performance by the Hawks during the third quarter. Nearly every player contributed points to the winning score, and the Wyverns had many rebounds and steals. Outstanding performances were had by several players including Devin Wolff ‘23 with 24 points and Jacob Joseph '23 with 13 points. A big win to wrap up the season, the team has much to be proud of.

The Varsity Girls’ Squash team won 7-0 against Williston on Feb. 20. In the team’s last match of the regular season, they made a dominant final statement, with each player winning her match (including extra matches, the score was 10-0). Sydney Smith '21, Ananya Alleyne '19, Cami Berckemeyer '19, Izzy Berckemeyer '21, Claudia Petrie '19, and Sloan Duvall '21 all pulled off 3-0 sweeps and adapted nicely to the differences in the court environment. Ely Alleyne '23, Mai Lin Pomp-Shine '20, Amrita Natarajan '22, and Shreeya Chalikonda '21 rebounded from a close loss of a game to take their matches 3-1. It was a convincing win that set us up to enter New Englands confidently.

The JV Girls’ Squash won 5-2 against Williston on Feb. 20. Ending the season on the highest of notes, the JV squad pulled off their first win of the season in a strong display of the skills the team has been working on since November. Aimee Zheng '22 came back from being down a game in the number one spot to win three in a row and take the match 3-1. Alyssa Pilecki '20 showed off her excellent serving to win her match 3-1 as well. Mackenzie Caruso '22, Macy Isenberg '22, and Aliza Sadiq '22 exemplified the strength and grit of the younger half of our team by winning their matches 3-1, 3-0, and 3-2 in the number six, seven, and eight spots. Co-captains Sophia Kaufman '20 and Anusha Memon '20 had tough matches but led the team to victory by setting the competitive tone for the day.

The MS Squash team lost against Rectory School on Feb. 23 with a score of 2-5 in the last match of the season. The Rectory school proved to be a formidable opponent and players competed in some close scoring games. Rayyan Haider ‘24 and Cole Banning ‘24 as well as Owen Roy ‘25 played strong and were victorious in their matches. We want to thank all of our Form 2 players for their hard work and leadership this season. We look forward to seeing them play at the Upper School!
