KO Appoints Esteemed Head Football Coach

James (J.B.) Wells has been named the new football coach at Kingswood Oxford School. Prior to assuming this position at KO, Wells was the head football coach for the Bowdoin College Polar Bears for three seasons where he was responsible for the total administration of the football program, including coaching, recruiting, staff and roster management. While there, six of his student-athletes were named NESCAC All-Conference and 52 were named NESCAC Academic All-Conference.

Wells has 27 years of experience as a coach and an administrator at some of the leading academic institutions in the country, including Brown University, Trinity College, Bates College, and the University of Chicago. As the first football coach at Endicott College from 2001-2014, he created a culture of success under which Endicott flourished into one of the top teams in the Northeast, highlighted by New England Football Conference (NEFC) Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2010 and 2013, back-to-back ECAC North Bowl victories in 2011 and 2012, and an overall record of 75-48 in 12 varsity seasons.

In 2010, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston and the New England Football Writers named Wells Division II/III Coach of the Year, and in 2013 they honored him as the New England Conference Coach of the Year. Wells attended Trinity College as an undergraduate where he earned the Trinity College Blanket Award which is presented to athletes who earn nine or more varsity letters in three sports.

In addition to leading KO’s football program, Wells will serve as assistant director of admissions and advancement, supporting the Office of Admissions and the Office of Advancement in various recruitment, retention, and philanthropic efforts. He will draw from his experience working in admissions at the college level and serve as a liaison between athletics and various administrative offices on campus.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to continue to coach a team that has had great success and to take it to the next level. I’m also looking forward to engaging with the admissions and advancement office in a three-pronged approach to support the entire school. I can’t wait to get started,” said Wells.

Director of Athletics Debbie Fiske said, “J.B. is a dynamic addition to KO. He’s more than just a great, winning coach; he’s a mentor to his players who truly cares about them and supports them both on and off the field. Together, we will work to ensure the continued success of our football program.”

In 2015 the Wyverns won the NEPSAC Mike Atkins Bowl Championship. The team had a strong 2018 season with a 6-2-1 record and played in the 2018 Mark Conroy Bowl Championship.
