Recently, the group took this commitment to the next level, coming together in a big way for a teammate. They didn’t do it for accolades. Or so people would praise them. They simply did it to show their friend, and teammate, that he meant a lot to them.
For the last five months, senior John Doar ’20 has been fighting a battle with cancer. Thankfully, the prognosis is positive and things are moving in a good direction. His treatment has caused him to lose his hair, something that though inevitable has caused him a great deal of apprehension. His team sensed this and decided to do something about it. On a random day in September, members of the team showed up at a local barbershop and shaved their heads.
“We came up with this idea just out of support for John more than anything else,” said Captain Jackson Wolff ’19. “We were always a tight-knit team, but this has brought us together on an entirely new level, and we have never been closer.”
The gesture touched John and the Doar family, deeply. John’s mother Carole shared, “Our whole family has been buoyed the kindness and support of the KO community. John had been dreading losing his hair, which was an inevitable part of cancer and chemo treatments. The fact that the soccer team, and so many friends, jumped right in to shave theirs in support really says a lot about the kindness and character of these teens. We are so thankful for this kind of friendship.”
Varsity Coach Hikmet Aslan echoed her sentiment. A coach who puts character first on and off the field is proud of his team stepping up and on their own accord. "John Doar and his family are a part of the KO community and have been since he entered the school in Upper Prep,” said Aslan. “If you are fortunate enough to know John and his wonderful family then you know why so many people have rallied around them with their love and support. My soccer team is no different. We all realize that the battle John has been fighting goes way beyond the fields or classrooms of KO, and we are all willing to do whatever we can to be there for the Doar family. Shaving heads was just one way to show our love for John!"
Wolff agreed, “John means everything to us and as a team, we mean everything to each other so we all knew we just had to come together to support one of us in a tough time!”
