Message of Kindness Brings Sweet Treats

Kristen Weldon
A few weeks ago Janvi Sikand ‘19 was thinking about some of the unfortunate things around the world, and especially how in the winter months the weather can make people feel a bit down. It prompted her to do something about it.
Sikand loves to cook. She loves chocolate. And, most of all, she loves when people share kindness and feel appreciated. So she got to work.
With help from a few friends including Elise Gendrich ‘19, Eloise Bavier ‘18, and Shelby Fairchild ‘17, who she describes as “all very kind people,” over the course of two days, the group made all different kinds of chocolate treats. Chocolate bark, chocolate with caramel and pretzels, chocolate with sprinkles. In short, there was a lot of chocolate.
On February 14, Valentine’s Day, she set the sweets up on a tray in Roberts, next to a blank board with markers, and a sign, made by Bavier, that simply said; “Write happiness and take happiness.”
The response was nothing short of overwhelming. Students, teachers and staff stopped to write positive thoughts, inspirational comments and kind words that resonated with them. One board quickly filled up and a second followed. There were a variety of different notes from; “You are esteemed, chosen, valued, and loved,” to ones of encouragement; “You are going to ace that test today!” Sikand was overjoyed.
“I just thought it was really easy to do something like this. It didn’t take a ton of time to coordinate, and didn’t require a lot of people,” she said. “So it was small for me to do but made a big impact.”
One passerby shared Mahatma Ghandi’s quote; “You must be the change you wish to see in the world." A little kindness really does go a long way. And that’s pretty sweet.
