Marottolo Named Semifinalist in National Merit Scholarship
This means he is among the top 1% of the 1.5 million juniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT exam last year. He will now compete for designation as National Merit Finalist and for a Merit Scholarship to be awarded next spring.
Natalie Demers, Associate Head of School said, “We are incredibly proud of David, not only for his academic accomplishments and earning this distinction but for his involvement in many ways in our school and community life. He is a wonderful member of our community and an incredibly talented multi-dimensional young man."
Marottolo is an accomplished musician mastering the clarinet and piano, singing in Crimson 7 and performing perennially in our winter musicals, Wind Ensemble and Outlook. Outside of KO, Marottolo is in the Connecticut Youth Symphony and the Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble. Most notably, he was selected for the New Haven Symphony Orchestra's Young Composer Project, a two-year program through which he has been mentored by Dr. Hannah Lash of the Yale School of Music. His musical composition, Chanson d’automne was selected for performance at the Young Composer Concert at the Eastern Division Conference of the National Association for Music Education (NafME) last winter.
Despite the time demands of Marottolo's music commitments, he is also a mainstay in the Forensic Union. An outstanding debater, Marottolo won the top prize at the Choate Rosemary Hall debate in January 2017 for First Place Advanced Speaker. As a result of his impressive performance, he qualified to advance to the World Championships in Australia. He also participates in Mock Trial, epic, and the KO News while engaging in our most selective courses, including six AP® courses by the end of his junior year.
His college advisor, Peggy Clark said, ”David is an unusually mature, grounded, principled, humble, and generous young man. KO has been extremely fortunate to call him one of our own."
