Do you remember? Winter 2000
Taking a trip down memory lane a quarter of a century ago-winter, 2000. What was happening on campus? Do you remember?
Female athletes were celebrated on the fourth Girls and Women in Sports Day. Guest speaker, Dr. Turco, discussed role models and their importance in a girl’s athletic achievements and the background of women athletes along with her story of struggles for equality, which she wrote about in her book, Crashing the Net (an account of the U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey Team’s Olympic journey to winning a gold medal).
The SMAKO (Sexual Minority Awareness at Kingswood Oxford) Club, open to all students, was bringing the KO community together to openly discuss “gay, sexual minority and women’s issues”.
Thespians were preparing for the winter musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, by Charles Dickens.
A new Improvisation group that practiced in an extra workshop performed for the first time in the annual Winter Festival of the Bands.
The construction of new squash courts was taking place at the fieldhouse near what used to be the former middle school campus.
The very popular, annual, Form Four Bingo Night took place. Tickets cost only $1.00, which also entered you into the door prize raffle. Packets of cards cost $6.00. The money raised was divided up between Form Four and charities, including Team Tobatí and the Make A Wish Foundation. Exciting prizes included Boston Red Sox tickets, Dave Matthews Band concert tickets, gift cards and jewelry. Were you a winner?
And who can ever forget the Form Three fundraiser-the amazing James Mapes, renowned hypnotist, who returned to KO for a third time. Hypnotized students danced on stage, yelled at each other, forgot their names, and clung to each other when Dr. Mapes told them that the temperature was below zero. What a fun night! Were you there on stage?
