Tennis – Boys JV vs Pomfret School – Away
JV Boys Tennis
In their first match of the season, the JV Boys tennis team squared off against long-time rival Pomfret.
We have quite a few new players this year, and it was a good way for them to cut their teeth against a team that was a bit stronger than in the past. In singles, Jaden Weinstein (’21) got off to a rocky start, trying to figure out his very strong opponent. By the end of the match, though, Jaden was able to fend off several attempts by Pomfret and held on to win his match. Newcomer Koby Braunstein (’22) played some excellent tennis. Due to a chronic shoulder issue and a late run by his opponent, though, Koby couldn’t hold on, dropping the match by a close score of 7 games to 9. Drini Puka (’21) played very well during the second half of his match, and he narrowly missed winning his match (this one took over 90 minutes to play, with his team mates all lined up along the sidelines, cheering him on). Ajay Ganesh (’22), another newcomer to our program, displayed some definite talent in his match, and he is off to a good start. Roberto Correa (’22) got his first match under his belt, and Christian Stec (’20) had his first match of the new season with an opponent who was just a little more experienced than our Wyvern, although Christian played some very smart tennis during the second half of his match. Returning player Ethan Raisner (’21) played at #7 exhibition singles and put away his opponent very quickly by a score of 8 games to 2. On the doubles side, the Wyverns had a tough start this year. At #1 doubles, newcomer Matt Marottolo (’20) and veteran James Ravalese (’20) tried their best to get into an early groove, but the “Griffins” were just too strong for them. Anan Meraney (’20) and newcomer Shumayl Syed (’22) had a good start, yet dropped quickly after some unforced errors and fast speed on the return shots from the other team. Veteran players Rabih Chughtai (19) and Jon Fu (’19) rounded out the ladder for doubles, and they, too, got caught in the late afternoon wind that wreaked havoc on their shots and their serves, in particular. All in all, the Griffins were stronger this year than last, and our Wyverns are just beginning to build their skills and team communication. It will be interesting to see how they do as the season progresses. We travel to Hopkins School in two weeks’ time to face our biggest rival on the match schedule. Go Wyverns!
