KO Middle School Tennis Edges Hopkins in Thrilling 5–4 Victory
The Wyverns battled to a hard-fought 5–4 win over Hopkins on April 23, 2025, highlighted by dominant performances and gritty comebacks.
At the top of the singles ladder, Ashir Mathur and Reid Burtman were locked in from the start, cruising to convincing wins. Ashir controlled the pace with blistering groundstrokes and a strong serve, showing great finesse and smart shot selection in his 8–1 win. Reid was rock-solid from the baseline and showed off improved net play, dictating points with sharp volleys en route to an 8–0 victory.
The most dramatic moments came at singles spots three and four. Mason Benavides and Kate Pfadenhauer each found themselves trailing 2–5, but neither backed down. Their determination and resilience turned the tide, as both clawed back to force tiebreakers and emerged victorious under pressure—showcasing mental toughness beyond their years.
The decisive point came in doubles, where Vysh Setru and Nina Matamana, newly promoted to the number two spot after back-to-back wins, delivered again. With booming forehands and solid teamwork, they outlasted a strong Hopkins duo, earning a clutch 8–6 win to seal the match for KO.
It was a true team effort, full of focus, fight, and fantastic tennis.
