MS A Tennis Team Earns Historic Win Over Rectory in Season Opener
The Middle School A tennis team kicked off their spring season with a thrilling home match against Rectory on April 2, ultimately clinching a historic first-ever win against the opponent in dramatic fashion. With six singles and three doubles matches on the lineup, the overall match came down to the final doubles court, tied at 4-4.
The deciding moment belonged to Nina Matamana and Vysh Setru, playing in their first-ever match at the No. 3 doubles position. The duo built a strong 7-4 lead in the 8-game pro set, but Rectory battled back to force a 7-7 tie, sending the match into a tiebreaker. Displaying remarkable composure under pressure, Matamana and Setru played a steadier game, found open spots on the court, and closed out the tiebreaker 7-3, securing the overall match win for KO.
Singles Highlights:
Aashir Mathur, playing his first match at the No. 1 singles spot, showed promise despite falling short. He gained valuable experience and is expected to be a key contributor as the season progresses.
Reid Burtman delivered his usual consistent style of play, but was edged out by an opponent with an arsenal of winning shots.
Mason Benavides executed a smart strategy at No. 3 singles, targeting his opponent’s backhand to earn a solid win.
Kate Pfadenhauer staged an impressive comeback from 1-4 down to win 8-5, using powerful groundstrokes once she settled into the match.
Anay Setru and A.J. Garcia both competed with heart in tough conditions, battling wind and cold but gaining key takeaways for future matches.

At No. 1 doubles, Sara Litzendorf and Gabe Chapman worked together seamlessly to secure a convincing win.
