Varsity Volleyball vs King – Away

V Volleyball

The KO Varsity Volleyball team had a tough 3-0 loss against King despite a strong effort against a talented opponent.

Right from the get-go in the first set, the Wyvern defense was on fire against a strong offense from King. At 4-2 in the first game, Allie Arcaro ‘24 had the dig of the season so far, showing her great composure and reflexes on defense (How does she do it?). There were also spectacular sets and occasional offensive pushes from co-captain Jill Plaut ‘23 that combined predictable excellence with unpredictable offensive jabs. The opponent couldn’t get around Keira Sullivan ‘23, who was right in sync with Plaut and Arcaro, blocking, tipping, and smashing the ball from the outside to keep KO dangerous as the set went on. King held their offensive wave in the end, and took the set 25-11.

The Wyverns made some great strategic adjustments in the second set to improve upon their first-set performance. Quin Kearney ‘23 had wonderful right side hits into the holes on the other side of the court in the early points of the set. Ava Cashman ‘24 was swinging freely on the outside and jettisoning the ball deep into the opponent’s court for some successful kills. Sullivan used insights from the first set to inform her precise serves and keep us in the set-long battle. After making great progress, the Wyverns were briefly bested in some key plays, and King took the second set 25-16.

Better and better each step of the way, the Wyverns ran into the third set confident that it would be their best and most determined set yet. Cashman supplemented her offensive strikes with a phenomenal dig in an early point, and from that point on our defense was reignited. Sullivan was switching it up with her hits to keep the opponent on the wrong foot, and it payed dividends for both our offense and defense. Lola Peck ‘26 was clobbering hits that the opponent couldn’t handle in the middle, and Jillian Alexander ‘24 had fantastic low serving that left the receiving players with very few options on the other side of the court. The Wyvern’s showed great grit and adaptation over the course of the set, yet unfortunately King took the set 25-19. It was a great learning match with many positive takeaways from how the team performed and carried themselves. Let’s go KOVB!
