Varsity Volleyball vs St. Luke’s School – Away

V Volleyball

The KO Varsity Volleyball team had a hard-fought win over St. Luke’s (3-1) that tested the Wyvern’s ability to convert solid plays and stay consistent during an away match.

The first set saw a gradual start from KO as we adjusted on offense and defense. Co-captains Jill Plaut ‘23 and Keira Sullivan ‘23 had some unstoppable 1-2 punches going, with Plaut carefully setting Sullivan on the outside for several unanswered hits across the net. Eve Repp ‘23 was making timely net decisions to put the ball away in the middle and to keep the opponent guessing. The game nearly came to a close with St. Luke’s taking a 24-17 lead, but then Quin Kearney ‘23 stepped up to the service line and had an unbelievable 9 point service run in a high-pressure situation. Backing up, Kearney’s consistent and precise serving, the Wyverns had excellent court coverage and dominated the net with aggressive strikes to stay alive. KO took the first set 26-24! The second set was another battle between the two teams, and involved another incredible comeback from the Wyverns, this time coming up a little short in extra points (25-27). Lola Peck ‘26 made her return to the middle in style, with key tipping attacks at pivotal moments, and Jillian Alexander ‘24 had some laser-precise, net-touching serves that helped the team claw back into the game. This time, it was Ava Cashman ‘24 on the service line who kept the dream alive by closing a 24-19 deficit with serves that started the opponent off on the wrong foot each time. St. Luke’s held on, however, and played great defense to win the set 27-25. The third set showed that the Wyverns were tired of the dramatic games, and we really dug in to take the lead. Allie Arcaro ‘24 began the set pulling off yet another diving save to help us keep a lead, and Sullivan was placing the ball in the open spaces with both her serves and outside hits, so KO took a sizable lead that we held throughout the set. We ended up closing the set 25-16. In the fourth and final set, KO remained consistent with our scrappy defense in order to shut down offensive pushes from the opponent. Cashman connected on several powerful hits on the outside, and Plaut added to the offensive with right side hitting on some plays when she ended up taking the first pass. The Wyverns took the set 25-15, and the match was over! We look forward to our next match at home on Saturday 9/24!
