Varsity Volleyball vs Suffield Academy – Away
V Volleyball
With a 5-0 winning streak going into the match, the KO Varsity Volleyball team was ready for a tight contest with Suffield.
In the first set, Suffield showed off their defensive skills early on, and handled the Wyvern offense well enough to take the lead. Jillian Alexander ‘24 and co-captain Keira Sullivan ‘23 pulled off effective service runs to put KO in the lead, and Alexander was winning all the jump balls at the net in the middle to secure more points. Lola Peck ‘26 had solidly struck hits down the middle throughout the set to keep us in the back-and-forth with Suffield. Near the end of the set, Sullivan had a pivotal block that shut down the opponent’s offense and set us up for some powerful strikes of our own off of precision setting from co-captain Jill Plaut ‘23. The Wyverns took the highly contested first set 25-19.
The second set saw Suffield taking control early on and igniting their offense on all sides. It became a slow, incremental climb back to parity that really tested the patience and consistency of our team. Nevertheless, Plaut led the team into successful plays with setting from all angles. This led to deep crosscourt hitting from Ava Cashman ‘24 to settle some of the longer points, as well as scrappy and creative offensive plays from Sullivan when things didn’t go exactly as planned. When the Wyverns brought the score back to a tie, Allie Arcaro ‘24 became a force to be reckoned with on the service line, using momentum to serve low and hard and give us the lead. It was a great fight to successfully take the set 25-19.
The third and final set proved to be another close one, as Suffield’s grit was commendable throughout. Peck was on fire hitting in the middle, adding great power to her strikes, and Quin Kearney ‘23 added her voice to the chorus of the offense with crosscourt hitting from the right side (as well as a spectacular one-armed save in a crucial point mid game). Sullivan made multiple diving saves to keep our chances alive and embody the motto “nothing touches the ground”. Arcaro had several dumbfounding digs of her own, and produced some lovely out-of-system sets from the back row, as well. Remaining consistent and determined, the Wyverns took the final set 25-17. We look forward to having another great match with Suffield later in the season!
