Leadership Institute Launches Impactful Summer Program
This summer marked the exciting launch of KO’s Student Leadership Institute, an initiative designed to cultivate authentic leadership experiences for students. Under the expert guidance of Jami Silver and Kelly Anstead, Co-Directors of the Roberts Center for Leadership, participants embraced real-world challenges and collaborated with diverse teams to make a meaningful difference both on and off campus.
A central feature of the program was hands-on engagement with local organizations. Students partnered with Loaves and Fishes and the Special Olympics, contributing their time, creativity, and problem-solving skills to support community needs. Their efforts culminated in presentations to Loaves and Fishes leadership, where they showcased innovative solutions designed to enhance the organization’s mission.
Beyond community outreach, students also tackled strategic projects aimed at strengthening life at KO. Their work included:
- Exploring Generative AI applications in education in collaboration with Lisa Loeb.
- Designing social media strategies alongside Susan to enhance communication and engagement.
- Planning Orientation programming with Kata Baker to enrich the experience for new students.
- Reviewing and refining the Bias Incident Reporting process with Kata Baker and Rich Mutts to promote a more inclusive environment.
- Developing advisory resources with Kata Baker to better support students.
- Contributing to Middle School assemblies and meetings with Kathy Dunn, ensuring cross-divisional connection and leadership.
Though not all students were available for the final presentations, every participant played a critical role in brainstorming, planning, and executing these initiatives. Their persistence, creativity, and willingness to take on authentic leadership challenges were inspiring.
The Student Leadership Institute’s inaugural summer highlights KO’s commitment to preparing students for leadership roles that extend far beyond campus. By combining community service with meaningful on-campus initiatives, students gained hands-on experience in collaboration, communication, and innovation. This program not only showcases the incredible work of our students but also underscores the power of authentic leadership opportunities to spark positive change.
