Tackling World Issues Through Model U.N.

Preliminary registration for area Middle Schools for the highly anticipated KO Model U.N. for Middle Schoolers (KOMUN) is now open. Since its founding in March 2012, KOMUN has attracted hundreds of students and their teachers from a wide range of public, private, charter, magnet and parochial schools throughout CT. The event is to be held on Sunday, November 17, 2019, from 8:45 a.m.-4:15 p.m. at the Kingswood Oxford School.

KOMUN is Kingswood Oxford’s Model UN for Middle Schools. This regional event introduces students in grades 6, 7, and 8 to global problems and challenges them to work collaboratively to solve them.  This year’s topics are “Global Economics and the Race to the Bottom” and Global Health and Infectious Diseases.”

KO history teacher and Model UN advisor Stacey Savin, the founder of KOMUN, believes that Middle School students can debate sophisticated world issues. “The students continue to impress me year after year. They always develop practical and creative solutions to global problems at the top of the world’s agenda and headlining the news. Much of the success of the program rests with the many devoted Middle School teachers who give their students this incredible opportunity and work with them to better their understanding of the world and the problems we need to confront.”

Teachers should visit the Kingswood Oxford school website to register. Registration closes October 4.
