One way I make sure to address the needs of every student is, first, the small class sizes really help so that I can make sure that I have at least a one-on-one connection at least once every class to personally check in with each student, especially when we’re doing practice problems or projects.
It’s also an understanding of the student before they even get to me. We have an advising system so I already have a bit of a sense of the students before they arrive. I get ready for what issues or challenges I think I might encounter, and then I let the student take the lead, watch how their learning, and follow up with them. I prioritize extra help equal to class. I feel like our time together outside of class is equally as important as a class. I will make myself available. Always. I have not said no to extra help this whole year, which has been something I am very proud of. It’s showing them that I’m there for them. They are my goal, and so meeting them where they are is a lot easier when you do that.
