The IMPACT Program’s Eco-Design and Construction class piqued my interest because it delved deeper into building design and engineering while also providing a hands-on experience. We primarily focused on biophilic designs, which connect humans to nature, to enhance your mood and productivity.
For one assignment, we selected the Soby Gym to update hypothetically using biophilic design principles and modernize it. Through extensive research, we incorporated biophilic designs into our reconstruction and remodel of the entire gym. This class and this experience are awesome. I find that I can learn a lot more when I’m not tested traditionally with a pen and paper, and I can apply my knowledge to real-life situations.
In addition to learning content, I discovered I like working in a group a lot more because I enjoy brainstorming with my teammates. Before this class, I didn’t appreciate group work. I enjoyed working together a lot, and I appreciated hearing everybody’s perspective and getting the best view on the situation. We usually found the best option or combined them to see if that was the optimal outcome.
Through the class, I’ve learned how to use various tools and apply them when redesigning a van for the Food4Life food pantry, including adding insulation and enhancing the comfort of the seats.
I would recommend this class to any student because you can see the impact of your learning in real-time and truly engage in problem-solving.
