The “We the People” IMPACT course is an opportunity for students to explore both the history of American democracy and discuss in depth the challenges it faces today and in the future. Each unit is based on significant Constitutional problems or changes, and class discussions are centered around the concept of citizenship and engaged participation. The culminating assessments were Mock Congressional hearings, in which small groups of students would research and collaboratively write a speech and respond to open Q&A by guest judges from the community.

This class has not only deepened my understanding of American history and the challenges facing our society, but it has also really impacted my personal growth. I initially took this course to challenge myself beyond my comfort zone, as I’ve always felt hesitant about public speaking. I saw this as an opportunity to improve my confidence and ability to express myself clearly. This course did all of that and so much more, and pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t expect.

One of the most valuable parts of this course was the opportunity to engage in mock congressional hearings. Students in groups of four to five sit opposite the judges— teachers, local politicians,  and have four minutes to give a speech in response to a prompt given a week or so in advance. After their prepared remarks, students put their notes away and engaged in six minutes of open questions from the judges.

At first, I was intimidated by the idea of standing in front of professionals and sharing my opinions on complex topics. The hearings required me to not only consider what I had learned in the course but also to apply that knowledge to real-world issues. I had to think critically, listen attentively, and respond thoughtfully to questions. It was scary at first—to think on my feet and be confident in my ideas.

With each hearing, because of the advice from our judges and Mrs. Sperber. I grew more confident in my ability to express my viewpoints, collaborate with my group, and answer questions with a deeper level of understanding. By the time I participated in my final hearing, I was so proud of the progress I had made. The difference in my confidence and my ability to contribute to questions was so shocking. It was rewarding to know that through the uncertainty when I was starting, the ability to have hands-on experience led to so much growth.

Even beyond the classroom, the skills I developed in “We the People” have an impact on my life. I find myself more capable of engaging in conversations about current events, thinking critically about social issues, and more willing to share my opinions with confidence.

The course challenged me to delve deeply into the historical context of our country, to understand the foundational principles that shaped our democracy, and to reflect on how those principles continue to influence the social and political issues we face today.
