Big Sports Weekend – Softball Wins Championship

At the end of the spring, our Wyverns saw a lot of nail-biting post-season play.

On the road, the varsity softball team visited the top-seeded St. Luke’s Storm.  On Saturday, in a rowdy environment, the team found themselves tied 1-1 in the 6th inning when Olivia Doran laid down a bunt to score Remi Rosado.  Alexis Nisyrios scored an insurance run in the 7th and struck out two in the bottom of the 7th to hold on to the 3-1 victory for the Wyverns.  The following day, the team traveled to Choate Rosemary Hall and took home the win for the Western New England Championship game.  A tremendous repeat from last year.

On Saturday, our varsity girls’ tennis team fought through tough injuries to defeat Concord Academy (5-0) in the NEPSAC Quarterfinals and St. Mark’s (7-2) in the Semifinals.  Noor Sayej played incredibly at doubles and singles, and Alex Doering fought through an injury to earn a gritty W.  The marathon matches ended late in the evening. On Sunday, KO hosted the NEPSAC Class B Championship match against a very strong Rivers team in the Hoffman Fieldhouse. The girls fought with grit but came up short and took home the silver.

The other home game on the day was the varsity baseball team hosting Choate Rosemary Hall in the Founders League Semifinals.  Harry Engle pitched an outstanding 8 innings and had the Wyverns even, 1-1 after exiting the game.  3 innings later, Connor Ellsworth made a leaping catch over the outfield fence to rob a home run and keep the game tied, 1-1.  This set up Medina in the bottom of the 14th, hitting a sac fly and scoring Dom Trolio to secure the 2-1 victory.  The baseball team will host Taft on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.for the championship game.

Meanwhile, the varsity boys’ track & field team won the New England Championship in Massachusetts!  A complete team effort and amazing finishes. The team was led by Tyler Brown, who earned NEPSAC MVP honors for the Wyverns.  Over on the girls’ side, Claire Palmer ’25 set two more meet records in the 1500m and 3000m on her way to another NEPSAC MVP!

Here are the awards: Boys’ 100M – Joey Kalinowski, 2nd place; Boys’ 200M – Tyler Brown, 1st place; Boys’ 400M – Christian Gordon, 3rd place; Boys’ 800 – Robin Benz, 3rd place; Girls’ 1500 – Claire Palmer, 1st place; Boys’ Discus – Justin Morle, 1st place; Boys’ Long Jump – Tyler Brown, 1st place; Boys’ Shot Put – Justin Morle, 2nd place; Boys’ Long Jump – Tyler Brown, 1st place; Boys’ Triple Jump – Tyler Brown, 1st place; Boys’ 4X100M Relay, 1st place; Boys’ 4X400 Relay, 1st place

The varsity boys’ golf team competed in the Founders League Championships at the Watertown Golf Club. Austin Perkins shot a 4 under (67) and beat the entire field by 5 strokes!

“Such an amazing day for our Wyverns, said Director of Athletics Josh Balabuch. “From the theater performance of The Little Mermaid on Friday, to the diamond, from the courts to the track and greens – I am so unbelievably proud of our student-athletes.  Some of them will still tell you that they are not finished, and they are right.  Big championship game on Wednesday.  Please come and support our amazing students!
