Kingswood Oxford music students have no shortage of performance opportunities! In addition to hosting three music festivals each year, Kingswood Oxford offers nine vocal performance groups, two orchestras, and four bands. Choral Ensembles

Students in the Upper Prep Choraliers develop their individual and ensemble vocal techniques, performing at various concerts and events, both on and off campus.
Cantabile is the Middle School’s festival and touring chorus. In addition to performing at Kingswood Oxford concerts and events, Cantabile tours locally and regionally. Cantabile members work with Kingswood Oxford’s Composer Colloquy visiting artists (in workshops and master classes) and have premiered 25 commissioned works. In recent years, Cantabile performed with:
  • Children’s Chorus of Washington
  • Young People's Chorus of New York City
  • Amherst College Concert Choir
  • New York University Singers
  • Temple University Concert Choir
  • Music Institute of Chicago, and others
F2B is the select a cappella group for boys in Forms 1 and 2. Students work with visiting artists from the Composer Colloquy and have premiered 15 commissioned arrangements in performances in Boston, Chicago, Hartford, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
The Octopipers, Kingswood Oxford’s oldest student group, is a Middle School, all-girls vocal group directed by Steve Mitchell. Octopipers train with visiting artists as well as tour throughout the region. The group has won numerous awards and were recognized in DownBeat magazine for excellence in vocal jazz, pop, rock, and blues.
The Concert Choir, which is open to students in Forms 3-6, provides the foundation to Kingswood Oxford’s choral program. Here, students develop ear training, vocal techniques, and the ability to read music. The Concert Choir performs at the annual Choral Expo and Upper School Choral Fest.
Students audition to perform with Voce Novissima, the all-female, Upper School choral group, where they perform multi-genre a cappella works. The group participates with Access Opera, the Metropolitan Opera’s education program, and works with visiting artists and guest composers. Each spring, Kingswood Oxford and Voce Novissima host the Wyvern Women’s Choral Festival in the Roberts Theater on campus.
Outlook is a select ensemble of students in Forms 4-6 who audition for a spot. The group performs a variety of jazz, pop, Broadway, and contemporary music. Outlook participates in campus concerts, regional festivals, and competitions.
The Oxfordians represent the most skilled female singers in the Upper School who are accepted into the choir through an audition process. They compete in the Wyvern Invitational A Capella Festival and perform in various school concerts and for events.
Like the Oxfordians, the Crimson 7 feature the talents of the Upper School’s most skilled vocalists. In addition to performing in Kingswood Oxford concerts, this male singing group competes in the Wyvern Invitational A Capella Festival.


Middle School String Orchestra is open to all experienced string players (violin, viola, cello, and double bass) who perform a varied repertoire String Orchestra performances including:
  • Kingswood Oxford’s Candlelight Concerts
  • Spring Concert
  • Special events
  • School assemblies
Selected players perform with Upper School students. Individual lessons are available on campus during the school day with a visiting professional.
The Upper School String Orchestra is open to students who play various string instruments — violin, viola, cello, and double bass. In addition to playing in Kingswood Oxford concerts, students focus on their individual playing techniques and the development of the ensemble as a whole. The Upper School String Orchestra performs in both string orchestra and chamber music settings. Outstanding student musicians are often invited to play with the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra.


Upper School Concert Band is a performance group open to Upper School woodwind, brass, and percussion players. The Band performs at evening concerts and for on-campus events, playing a classic concert band repertoire, as well as new music.
Students in the Middle School Concert Band develop their technical skills with a varied repertoire of music. These woodwind, brass, and percussion players perform at school assembles, concerts, events, and on special trips.
Members of the Middle School Jazz Band include woodwind, brass, percussion, piano, bass, and guitar players who audition for a spot. Performers develop their ensemble and improvisational skills through the study and performance of jazz, rock, and Latin music traditions.
Open to advanced jazz students by audition, the Upper School Jazz Combo performs a variety of musical styles within jazz. Here, student performers also learn the advanced concepts of jazz improvisation. In addition to performing on campus, the Upper School Jazz Combo performs at either the Berklee Jazz Festival or the UMass High School Jazz Festival.
Advanced wind, brass, and percussion students audition to perform with the Upper School Wind Ensemble. The group focuses on advanced wind ensemble literature and the work of established orchestral composers, performing on campus and in the greater community.


Middle School’s KOnnections unites the Middle School choirs with other school and professional groups from throughout New England in a performance exchange. Participating choirs have included the KP Singers of King Philip Middle School, the Boston Children’s Chorus, the Mansfield Chamber Choir of Mansfield Middle School, and others.
Wyvern Women’s Choral Festival — Children, high school, and adult choirs from throughout the Greater Hartford region come to KO each year to work with a female composer and perform her work. Visiting artists to date include Amy Bernon, Dr. Gwyneth Walker, and Dr. Mary Ellen Junda.
Wyvern Invitational A Cappella Festival — Each January, Kingswood Oxford hosts the Wyvern Invitational A Cappella Festival, the largest scholastic a cappella competition in New England. Kingswood Oxford, public and independent high school choirs from throughout New England compete in various categories and showcase their talents in Roberts Theater. The competition is fierce, and the sold-out audience always enjoy an evening of exciting and amusing musical entertainment. All proceeds from the Festival benefits Team Tobati.
