In a tough loss against AOF, the Wyverns went down 40-49 at home in Hewitt. The first half showcased the Wyverns’ defense as they kept the opponents score low and rebounded with ease. Shots, however, simply were not dropping. Nearly 60% of shot attempts, from easy layups to pressure 3’s, fell outside of the desired target. In the first half the team leaned heavily on Xavier Hernandez-Newton ’27 who, supported by Tyler Bergquist ’27, led the team in both shots and steals. Things were looking good at half with KO up 26-20, though the pace began to sway as the team headed into the locker room. The second half, plainly, was largely unsuccessful from an offensive perspective. AOF tied the game 35-35 with 7 minutes remaining and hardly a point was scored by either team during over three full minutes of play. As the volleys went back and forth, it is important to acknowledge that the Wyverns slowed down and lost some momentum as AOF inched ahead. In the last three minutes the Winged Beavers went from 38 to 39, then 42 and ran four more points purely on foul shots before a final 3-pointer ended the game. With an away game against Marianapolis coming up on Wednesday, the team seeks to refocus and recoup at tomorrow’s practice.
