In a nail biter to the very finish, KO edged out Hopkins 46-45 in the last moments of play. In their first “on the road series” game, KO traveled to New Haven looking for a W and was met with an evenly matched opponent. The first minutes of the game were filled with stops; in fact, the score didn’t crack 7 points for almost a third of the first half. Preston Scott ’27 made an immediate impact on the court, and between his shots and steals he helped fellow freshmen Tyler Bergquist ’27 and Xavier Hernandez-Newton ’27 move the ball through the Hilltoppers defense. At halftime the Wyverns were up by 6 points (21-15), but the hardest battles of the game were yet to come. What started off as a low scoring game quickly escalated as KO went on a 14-point run and Hopkins had little to show for; however, with 7 minutes remaining in the second half Hopkins made an equally impressive run and tied the game 37-37. For a brief moment, it was a stalemate. Admittedly, our team did not move the needle for roughly 3-4 minutes of play (and neither did Hopkins), and while the Hilltoppers inched their way forward a stop was essential. “X” ’27 broke the tide with a lights-out three-point shot and the two teams resumed their volley back and forth. With just under two minutes remaining, the score was 46-45 with KO in the lead. Patience, patience, patience. For the less-initiated, JV basketball is without a shot clock. KO ran down the time until Hopkins finally made a steal for the ball with 6.9 seconds remaining. The teams held their breath as a quick Hopkins pass, then another, then another, then a dish under the rim….fell incomplete. Phew! KO takes home the victory into the long weekend and is hungry for more next Wednesday at the Canterbury School. Go Wyverns!
