JV Boys Basketball

In a nail-biter against Marianapolis Prep, the Wyverns clinched their victory after two consecutive halves of neck and neck play. It was a rocky start, both teams were coming off losses and hungry for a win; each team traded baskets and rebounds as the first minutes pressed forward, there was clear grit and determination on both sides of the court. Though known as a lights-out shooter from the three point line, freshman Xavier Hernandez-Newton ’27 stepped in this week and responded to the MPS zone defense with aggressive drives (drawing fouls and free throws all along the way). Lucas Wells ’26 had an impressive number of minutes, during which his blocks, rebounds, and the occasional layup lifted his teammates out of their seats. At the half, it was 23-23…but a last millisecond layup would bring MPS up to 25 and over the Wyverns. Adjustments were made and Tyler Bergquist ’27 stepped up in a huge way in the second half: his drives were aggressive, his defense was spot on, and he saw victory on the horizon. Those hopes were snatched away as two teams fired back and forth at 35-35, then 41-41, and eventually MPS took the lead. With 49 seconds remaining, the score was 48-51 with the Wyverns down 3 points. A quick layup by Hernandez-Newton followed by a line violation on MPS put the ball right back into the Wyverns hands. Bergquist sealed the deal another strong drive to layup with less than 10 seconds on the clock and KO took the “W.” Next week, we’ll be back at home in Soby Gym against Loomis…go KO!
