In their fourth game of the season, the Wyverns traveled for the first time for a Saturday game to Pomfret to face off against the Griffins. As soon as the first half was underway, it was clear that these two teams were matched up and even; one team would need to outplay the other with grit and effort. Xavier Hernandez-Newton ’27 and Tyler Bergquist ’27 led the charge with layups and three’s keeping the Wyverns neck and neck with their opponents. Despite a few travels and consecutive fouls, the Wyverns ended the first half near neck and neck with the Griffins down 21-18. In the second half, Pomfret went on a 15 point run which effectively changed the momentum for both teams. It was a second half of many free throws as Beckett Ryan ’27, John Sokale ’27, and Tyler Bergquist ’27 all drew fouls and shot for the team. Despite no points in the scorebook, freshman Preston Scott ’27 found other ways to effect the game, securing five rebounds and setting countless picks to get the Wyverns’ offense open looks or drives to the bucket. The game ended at 51-33 and every player touched the court.Losing never feels good, but it may have been a necessary lesson today at an important point in our season so that we can reevaluate and refocus moving forward. Next week we’re back at it with two games, a home game next Wednesday vs. Fredrick Gunn and a rematch against the Westminster School on Friday evening.
