The Varsity Football team defeated Cushing Academy 40-6 in the season-opener on Sept. 22.

There were many standout players on both sides of the ball for the Wyverns. On offense, Justin Edwards ’21 rushed for 82 yards and 2 touchdowns on 12 attempts. Key blocks from Jared Cotte ’22, Stacey Beasley ’20, Steve Howard ’19, Joe Aiello ’20, and Ethan Miner ’19 helped lead the way all game. Quarterback Sam Capodice ’20 was the offensive player of the game for the week, completing 14-22 pass attempts for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns, while adding another rushing touchdown of his own. Kyren Petteway ’19, Wes Pierce ’20, and Jeff Davis ’21 were the primary receiving targets, reeling in 96, 63, and 31 yards respectively on the day. Petteway and Pierce each caught one touchdown pass, and Petteway added a 70-yard punt return touchdown to round out the scoring for the Wyverns. The KO defense was relentless throughout the game, not allowing a score until the final play. Led by Josh Leshem ’19; with 8 tackles, 2 sacks, and a fumble recovery, the defense had the Penguins on their heels throughout the contest. Winston Ware ’19 added 7 tackles on the day, and turnovers caused by Pierce and Leshem helped keep the Wyvern offense in great field position all game. Coltrane Joseph ’19 and Broox Bolden ’19 made great plays in the defensive backfield, limiting the Cushing offense to three completed passes all game. The Wyverns next game is Sept. 29 at home against Kents Hill School.
