Tennis – Boys Varsity vs Choate Rosemary Hall – Away

We traveled to Wallingford for a noon match against a talented and balanced Choate team. The score does not necessarily reflect how closely contested the match was. Choate is the stronger squad, but we made them work for it, as three of the six singles matches went to supertiebreakers. Additionally, KO took the #1 doubles proset but lost at 2 and 3. At #1 singles, the level of play was exceptional, as was the sportsmanship exhibited by both players. Ciaran Concepcion forced his talented opponent to a third set supertiebreaker. Even though the 10-8 breaker did not go his way, it was a situation where his opponent won the match rather than Ciaran losing it. It was the best 1 singles match I have witnessed this season. At #2 , KO’s Pratt Blair fell in straight sets to his opponent who played a great match, avenging a loss to Pratt in our preseason invitational tournament. At #3, KO’s freshman Isaiah Shobola came back from a 9-5 deficit to win a thrilling 12-10 supertiebreaker. It was a gutty performance, for sure. At #4, KO’s Neil Reddy played better than the score indicated. His opponent was simply too strong, and sometimes players can only tip their cap to a player that has all the shots. At 5 and 6, we put up a good fight, as Saahit Gaddipati at #5 came back to win the second set but came up short in a 10-6 breaker. At 6, Logan Barash competed well but lost 6-3 , 6-4 to a steadier player. On the whole, this was a really good high school tennis match, and it was nice to see kids on both teams compete in a classy way without excessive theatrics. Next up is what should be a closely contested match on Monday against a tough AOF team.
