Varsity Volleyball vs Suffield Academy – Home

V Volleyball

The Varsity Volleyball team had a rematch against Suffield, this time on our home court in Hewett Gym.

It was another close battle that the Wyverns were proud to win 3-1.

The opening set saw the Wyverns initially falling behind in the first several points, and then slowly finding their footing over the course of the set. Co-captain Jill Plaut ‘23 was making the most of her sets and even turning odd passes into offensive opportunities with pushes to the back of the court and timely tips. Co-captain Keira Sullivan ‘23 started off hitting strong on the outside and racked up the points once our back row passing settled in. Lola Peck ‘26 brought the Wyverns into the lead with her varied serving, including a deadly spinning shallow serve that earned her an ace. Once the Wyverns took the lead, they were able to stave off Suffield’s offense and win the set 25-19.

The second set was another close one, and required the Wyverns to maintain consistent serve receive passing and adaptive offense to stay in the lead. In the middle, Jillian Alexander ‘24 got the offense going early and was launching deep hits at the opponent. Allie Arcaro ‘24 was making incredible diving saves and setting the ball spectacularly when we got out of system. Once again, Peck expertly served her way into another timeout called by Suffield (she was unstoppable on the service line!) as the Wyverns charged into the lead. In the final point of the set, which was long and tense, Eve Repp ‘23 held her nerve and executed a beautiful hit from the right side that turned the tide for KO to eventually win the point and take the set 25-18.

The third set had, admittedly, a rocky start for the Wyverns. Suffield was dialed into their serving and made some great digs on defense, so it took some time for KO to regroup and climb our way back into the game. This time, leading the charge on offense was Ava Cashman ‘24, who was crushing hits on the outside, including a hit down the line that was phenomenal). Cashmam went on to serve for 6 points in a row, and the offense was back. As the score got closer and the pressure began to rise again, Quin Kearney ‘23 was the paragon of resilience on the service line (she’s proven that already, but it still amazes us!) and made difficult serves when it counted. On defense, Repp denied an outside kill from Suffield to keep us in the battle, and Plaut followed up with her own monster block that sent the ball careening into the open court on the opponent’s side. Despite our efforts to claw back, Suffield held their lead and took the set 25-21.

The fourth and final set saw the Wyverns turn the momentum they had built up at the end of the second set into an unstoppable avalanche. Kearney and Cashman returned to the service line to make things difficult for the opponent and put unbearable pressure on their defense, giving KO an early lead. Alex Segal ‘25 entered the game to bolster our defense with her high passes and incredibly speedy court coverage. Sullivan made calculated adjustments to her outside hits, spinning some in carefully and destroying others to keep the opponent from settling in again. With offense and defense in full swing, KO took the fourth set 25-11. It was another great battle with Suffield, but the team held on and can be proud of the result!
