Varsity Volleyball v Hopkins

KO loses to Hopkins 2-3 (25-20, 16-25, 25-16, 16-25, 8-15)

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team opened the 2017 season with a close match against Hopkins in Hewett Gym. After a few weeks of pre-season and two play days, the Wyverns were ready to play a match and came out strong. Good passing from the back row and excellent setting from co-captain Emma Smith set the KO offense in motion, with attacks from Sydney Smith and Haley Gervino. Co-captain Skylar Barron, served for 6 consecutive points to help win the first set decisively. Emma Henry made her debut as a KO varsity setter and was effective in using all hitters on the floor. In the second set, KO struggled to stay on the service line which made it difficult to get a string of points on the scoreboard. In the third set, Madi Henry and Kathryn Westrick, both playing in the middle hitter position, were able to turn the serving lull around with 6 and 5 points respectively. But in the fourth set, KO struggled to set up the offense with good service reception. While they rallied late, it was not enough to avoid the 5th set tie breaker. In the final, deciding set, KO fell quickly to a 0-8 deficit and while they fought to get back in the match, it was not enough to fend off the strong serving and effective hitting of the Hilltoppers.
