The KO Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team opened their season at home on Saturday against Williston Northampton.
After a great preseason and two plays days at Glastonbury High School and Loomis Chaffee where the players had been able to work on team cohesion and to build on their strong fundamental skills, they were excited for the season to begin.
The team took the match in 3 sets, 25-21, 25-11, 25-22. Co-Captains Sydney Smith ‘21 and Kathryn Westrick ’20 were an offensive force to be reckoned with, with strong setting from Westrick and many successful attacks from Smith, from both the front and back rows. Bella Leuschner ’20 served extremely well, staying on the line for 5 points in each of the first two sets. Making her varsity debut, Mackenzie Caruso ’22 stepped into the role of libero with consistency, setting up many KO offensive strikes. Trinity Hudson ‘20 played a key role in the team’s success, with a few kills in the middle and a 5 point stint on the service line in the second set. Lucy Gardner ‘21 and Audrey Decker ‘20 contributed offensively in the middle hitter/ blocker position, as did Naomi Wong ‘22 on the outside and Lindsey Bailey ‘22 on the right side. Lexi Vail ‘22 also made her varsity debut, adding to the team’s strong defense.
The team has another home match against Hopkins on Wednesday, September 18th.
