All last year, Marottolo steadily gained accolades for his singing, competing first in regionals and then in All-States in the spring. During the All-States in Hartford, Marottolo performed in front of a judge, sight read and rehearsed for two days for a final cumulative performance. To be considered for the Nationals, Marottolo had to create a video of his performance of a required piece of music. NafME notified him of his selection by email in August.
Despite a case of nerves prior to performing, Marottolo said he thoroughly enjoys singing. At KO he is a member of Crimson 7, Outlook and the Full Concert Choir. He said, “I always have nerves, but I remain as calm and collected as I can.” He loves the sound that large choirs produce and described a time at All-States that particularly moved him. “I went to the water fountain and took a step back and listened as the whole choir sang.It sounds like a cliche, but it’s really impressive when hundreds of people are all in one room with a common goal of making music together,” he said.
Although Marottolo listens to a wide array of music, he gravitates to the musical stylings of crooners like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. He enjoys the laid back feel of the music and believes that the range of his voice, a bass 2, fits well with that style of music. “I love Sinatra’s That’s Life. He has so much power in his voice. Even when he’s a little off-key, he owns it.”
Prior to attending the Nationals, Marottolo must prepare a selection of music for the daily rehearsals. “This is the first time I will be headed to Nationals and visiting Orlando. I'm really excited. There’s a lot of firsts,” he said.
