Forensic Union Members Compete in Canada

Jackie Pisani
Last week and this past weekend our Forensic Union members Katie Brough ’19, Dan Carroll ’19, and Elán Stadelmann ’20 competed in the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition in Toronto. Katie, Dan, and Elan competed against hundreds of students from the U.S., the U.K,. Canada, South Africa, South Korea, and India in a variety of public speaking events, including impromptu speaking, radio newscast, after-dinner speeches, interpretive reading, and dramatic interpretation.

As a team, they racked up an impressive total of 1,577 points! Elan had an especially strong showing in the radio newscast category--a unique event in which the competitor is given a newspaper they have not seen before, and they have 30 minutes to prepare a “top of the hour” summary of the news that they then present in the voice of a radio personality. Katie was able to capitalize on the skills she honed with the Speakers’ Forum here at KO last year, giving a moving and powerful interpretive reading of an excerpt from The Book Thief. Dan wowed judges with his hilarious dramatic interpretation of “Don’s Story,” by David Sedaris. Because of Dan’s high scores in all of his categories, he earned the stellar ranking of #8 American speaker in the entire competition.

Katie, Dan, and Elan truly represented KO well during their time in Toronto.
