Nicole Baratz

Upper School math teacher

Fairfield University, B.S.

As an educator, Upper School math teacher Nicole Baratz’s passion lies in breaking down barriers and fostering a love for mathematics among her students. She firmly believes that mathematics, often perceived as intimidating, can be accessible to everyone. Baratz thrives on enhancing this approach while simultaneously nurturing the enthusiasm of those already passionate about the subject. Her teaching approach revolves around instilling problem-solving skills, building confidence, and creating a supportive learning environment. “I love to see the students grow in their ability over the year. It’s incredibly satisfying.”

One of the most fulfilling aspects of Baratz’s teaching career is witnessing her students’ growth and confidence. She finds joy in guiding them through challenging problems and observing the small victories that accumulate over the course of a year. It’s gratifying for her to see students gain mathematical proficiency and a sense of self-assurance that extends beyond the classroom.

In her teaching practice, Baratz prioritizes interactive and engaging lessons that encourage movement and participation. For example, she incorporates activities like “Dance Dance Revolution” in her geometry class to teach about parallel lines. By allowing students to engage with the material physically, she aims to cater to diverse learning styles and create an atmosphere where learning is enjoyable.

Beyond mathematical skills, Baratz hopes to instill in her students a mindset of resilience and a willingness to take risks. She believes that making mistakes is essential to the learning process and strives to create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable exploring, asking questions, and learning from their errors. Inspirational messages adorn the walls of her classroom, reminding students to believe in themselves, stay humble, and embrace challenges.

Central to her teaching philosophy is building strong relationships with students. She prioritizes creating a welcoming and supportive space where every student feels valued and accepted. By fostering a sense of community and trust, she aims to empower students to reach their full potential and overcome any obstacles they encounter.

Outside of the classroom, Baratz is known for her love of – ready for it – soft pretzels, a passion that has led her to seek out these treats during her travels around the world in every country she has visited. Additionally, she shares a love for golf with her husband, enjoying it as a hobby and a bonding experience. As a KOā€™s golf team coach, she relishes sharing her enthusiasm for the sport with students.

Baratz is thoughtful when she considers who she would invite to her dinner partyā€”deceased or living ā€”touchingly, she would ask her grandmother, who holds a special place in her heart. Her grandmother’s warmth, hospitality, and knack for making every occasion memorable have left a lasting impression on Baratz. It would be a joy for her to share a meal with her grandmother and introduce her to her husband, creating cherished memories that bridge the past and present.

Through engaging lessons, supportive mentorship, and a genuine passion for mathematics, Baratz strives to empower students to embrace challenges, pursue their passions, and believe in themselves.
