Softball – Girls Varsity vs Cheshire Academy – Home
Varsity Softball
We expected that this game would be a challenge for us, given Cheshire’s historically strong roster. That didn’t stop the Wyverns from laying out our best effort.
The first out of the game came from a laser of a throw from Lexi Vail ’22 to Ava Radmanovich ’21 to catch a runner stealing 2nd base, which set us off to a good start. Mackenzie Caruso ’22 held her ground in center field with 2 clutch catches in the 2nd and 3rd, and Brigid Bernier ’19 showed her determination by following through after a nearly caught line drive to left field, getting the ball back to 3rd to snag a runner who rounded the base when she couldn’t afford to. Gabi Abramson ’22 and Kyra Dunnirvine ’23 held the mound for the game and navigated a strong batting lineup with the support of their team mates, and Jocelyn Ram ’20 made 3rd base a point of no return by skillfully dealing with the grounders and line drives that came her way to get the out.
Our goal on offense was to consistently put the ball in play, and that’s what we did. Mackenzie and Olivia Pear ’21 showed off the work they’ve been putting into slap hitting with some impressive slap contacts that kept the opponent on their toes. Lexi and Jocelyn brought out the big hits with a double to right center and a single to right, respectively, to score 2 runs in the first inning. With their contacts and competitive at-bats, the Wyverns made sure that Cheshire had to earn its way back to the offensive side, testing them with every pitch.
Though the score may not reflect this, our attitudes when we step up to the plate are miles ahead of where they were at the beginning of the season, and we look forward to bringing that intensity and competitiveness to the games ahead.
